Quotations G--H
Diana Gabaldon
If you can’t look a line of dialogue in the face and say exactly why it’s there—take it out or change it.
Character, I think, is the single most important thing in fiction. You might read a book once for its interesting plot—but not twice.
Don’t go overboard in avoiding “said.” Basically, “said” is the default for dialogue, and a good thing, too; it’s an invisible word that doesn’t draw attention to itself.
Pointing out the emotion in a scene is like laughing at your own jokes.

Dennis Gabor
Poetry is plucking at the heartstrings, and making music with them.

Neil Gaiman

The best advice I can give on this is, once it's done, to put it away until you can read it with new eyes. Finish the short story, print it out, then put it in a drawer and write other things. When you're ready, pick it up and read it, as if you've never read it before. If there are things you aren't satisfied with as a reader, go in and fix them as a writer: that's revision.

Ernest J. Gaines

My six words of advice to writers are: "Read, read, read, write, write, write." Writing is a lonely job; you have to read, and then you must sit down at the desk and write. There's no one there to tell you when to write, what to write, or how to write.
Zona Gale
I don't know a better preparation for life than a love of poetry and a good digestion.
Nadine Gardiner
Writing is making sense of life.
Bruce Garrabrandt

Paul Gauguin
I shut my eyes in order to see.

I can give tips on many things, but not productivity and time management. One thing I do is make time. Everyone loves talking about how busy they are. But there are 24 hours in a day. Make a half-hour or hour in a day, or an hour in a week, for writing. Just make sure you have at least one designated time—however long it is, given your constraints—to focus on writing. I treat my writing like a job, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I mean I give it the respect of a professional endeavor, not a hobby. Even when it was a hobby, I treated it like a job. It is important to do that because craft takes time and demands respect.
Linda Geraci
It’s hard to wring my hands when I am busy rolling up my sleeves.
Tiokasin Ghosthorse

Elizabeth Gilbert
What is creative living? Any life that is driven more strongly by curiosity than fear.
Ellen Gilcrist
We live at the level of our language. Whatever we can articulate we can imagine or explore.
Allen Ginsberg
To gain your own voice, you have to forget about having it heard.

Poetry is the one place where people can speak their original human mind. It is the outlet for people to say in public what is known in private.
Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.
Poetry is not an expression of the party line. It’s that time of night, lying in bed, thinking what you really think, making the private world public, that’s what the poet does.
Nikki Giovanni
Writers don’t write from experience, although many are hesitant to admit that they don’t. If you wrote from experience, you’d get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy.
Art offers a sanctuary to everyone willing to open their hearts as well as their eyes.

If everyone became a poet the world would be much better. We would all read to each other.
Malcolm Gladwell
I don't think I will ever write about politics or foreign policy. I feel like there is so much good writing in those areas that I have little to add. I also like to steer clear of writing about people whom I do not personally like.

Diane Glancy

I try. I am trying. I was trying. I will try. I shall in the meantime try. I sometimes have tried. I shall still by that time be trying.

Writing is the hammer & chisel that breaks down the established way of thinking. A concrete event, then an abstraction. An image, then a thought. Finally, writing builds another establishment with the fragments.

Poetry examines an emotional truth. It's an experience filtered through the personality of the poet. We look to poetry for visions, not scientific truths. The poet's job is to combine new elements. Explore their melting, seeping into one another.

Poetry saves what is human in this world going gaudy & insane. In exploring small truths, something larger might turn up, adding dimension, insight, vision, recognition to our lives. We just might be more complete, more aware after a poem.

Louise Glück

Your work will come out of an authentic life, and if you suppress all of your most passionate impulses in the service of an art that has not yet declared itself, you’re making a terrible mistake.

I tell my students, who believe passionately in explaining the work they're sharing, "You know, when you're dead, you can't go around explaining this thing--it has to be right there on the page.

Frank Goble
Because of their courage, their lack of fear, they (creative people) are willing to make silly mistakes. The truly creative person is one who can think crazy; such a person knows full well that many of his great ideas will prove to be worthless. The creative person is flexible; he is able to change as the situation changes, to break habits, to face indecision and changes in conditions without undue stress. He is not threatened by the unexpected as rigid, inflexible people are.
Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
Those who know nothing of foreign languages, knows nothing of their own.

Know your literary tradition, savor it, steal from it, but when you sit down to write, forget about worshiping greatness and fetishizing masterpieces.
Mary Gordon
However thoroughly we lose ourselves in the vortex of our invention, we inhabit a corporeal world.
Jorie Graham
Poetry describes, enacts, is compelled by those moments of supreme passion, insight, or knowledge that are physical yet intuitive, that render us whole, inspired. Among verbal events—which by their nature move horizontally, through time, along the lines of cause and effect—poetry tends to leap, to try to move more vertically: astonishment, rapture, vertigo—the seduction of the infinite and the abyss—what so much of it is after.
Robert Graves
To be a poet is a condition, not a profession.

There is no money in poetry, but then there is no poetry in money, either.

Poetry is neither a mystery nor a symbol nor a demon. Poetry is nothing more than a lonely consolation for the owner of a sickly soul and a man of solitude.
Kimiko Hahn
I mean why shouldn’t white and gray be an opposite pair; or take one color and allow an infinite splitting off. Such opposites, such contradictions, create energy in a poem.
For the writer, the idea is to look for repetition in a draft and see how to make the most of that repetition in the closure: moving with or against the reader’s expectations. One can see this played out formally in sonnets, for example.
Poems must be moving.
We have to give ourselves permission to trick ourselves. I am not trying to write a poem, I am trying to get to some raw material which will become a poem. And that’s what’s fun about form. It feels like an exercise, and then you can figure out where the poem is in that exercise, in that draft. Getting to my raw material is what I’m most interested in.
George Halas
Nothing is work unless you'd rather be doing something else.

Shannon Hale

Barbara Hardy

We dream in narrative, daydream in narrative, remember, anticipate, hope, despair, believe, doubt, plan, revise, criticize, construct, gossip, learn, hate and love by narrative. In order really to live, we make up stories about ourselves and others, about the personal as well as the social past and future.
Thomas Hardy
Poetry is emotion put into measure. The emotion must come by nature, but the measure can be acquired by art.
Joy Harjo
If you do not answer the noise and urgency of your gifts, they will turn on you. Or drag you down with their immense sadness at being abandoned.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their families, their histories too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems.
True power does not amass through the pain and suffering of others.

When I began to listen to poetry, it’s when I began to listen to the stones, and I began to listen to what the clouds had to say, and I began to listen to others. And I think, most importantly for all of us, then you begin to learn to listen to the soul, the soul of yourself in here, which is also the soul of everyone else.

Robert Hayden

Art is not escape, but a way of finding order in chaos, a way of confronting life.
Helen Hayes
Age is not important unless you're a cheese.
My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said that achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that's nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success.
The expert at anything was once a beginner.
If you rest you rust.
Only the poet can look beyond the detail and see the whole picture.
Seamus Heaney

Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.
Ernest Hemingway
We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.
When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people, not characters. A character is a caricature.

For a true writer each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment. He should always try for something that has never been done or that others have tried and failed. Then sometimes, with great luck, he will succeed.
Frank Herbert
There is no real ending. It’s just the place where you stop the story.
Hermann Hesse
Some of us think holding on makes us strong; but sometimes it is letting go.
Jane Hirshfield
In the wholeheartedness of concentration, world and self begin to cohere. With that state comes an enlarging: of what may be known, what may be felt, what may be done.
Tony Hoagland
I’m proud to be a funny poet. Humor in poetry is even better than beauty. If you could have it all, you would, but humor is better than beauty because it doesn’t put people to sleep. It wakes them up and relaxes them at the same time.

Alice Hoffman
Books may well be the only true magic.
I always felt and still feel that fairy tales have an emotional truth that is so deep that there are few things that really rival them.
All the characters in my books are imagined, but all have a bit of who I am in them--much like the characters in your dreams are all formed by who you are.
After a while, the characters I'm writing begin to feel real to me. That's when I know I'm heading in the right direction.
Even in times when it's difficult to figure out, how do you go forward, art--and books--always help.

Poetry has its own laws speaking for the life of the planet. It is a language that wants to bring back together what the other words have torn apart.

You are the result of the love of thousands. There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story. There are ways in, journeys to the center of life, through time; through air, matter, dream and thought.

Mystery is part of each life, and maybe it is healthier to uphold it than to spend a lifetime in search of half-made answers.
Oliver Wendell Holmes
Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow.
John Andrew Holmes
Speech is conveniently located between thought and action, where it often substitutes for both.

The function of art is to do more than tell it like it is—it's to imagine what is possible.
Horace
Good sense is both the first principal and the parent source of good writing.
Nick Hornby
It seems to me now that the plain state of being human is dramatic enough for anyone; you don't need to be a heroin addict or a performance poet to experience extremity.
A. E. Housman
Even when poetry has a meaning, as it usually has, it may be inadvisable to draw it out . . . Perfect understanding will sometimes almost extinguish pleasure.
Experience has taught me, when I am shaving of a morning, to keep watch over my thoughts, because, if a line of poetry strays into my memory, my skin bristles so that the razor ceases to act.
Pamela Hovland
Words really do matter. As a designer and artist, I’m interested in both the formal and semantic qualities of language.
I view improvising as a practice: when you have an idea you’d like to try, even if you think you’ll be terrible at it, or that it will be a failure, ask yourself why not? and try it. If possible, suspend the inhibiting idea of doing things perfectly. If you are afraid of people judging you, work in private at first, but do it, take the step to see what happens if you try out your idea. Just doing that much is liberating. With practice, it gets easier and easier, and then there’s no way you cannot continue, because it is thrilling and incredibly illuminating.

Every poem holds the unspeakable inside it. The unsavable…The thing that you can't really say because it's too complicated. It's too complex for us. Every poem has that silence deep in the center of it.

Rosenstock Huessy
Grammar and logic free language from being at the mercy of the tone of voice. Grammar protects us against misunderstanding the sound of an uttered name; logic protects us against what we say have double meaning.

The self on the page is exposed, invented, and discovered in roughly equal measure.

The closer you pay attention to the world, the stranger it appears. A plant looked at under a microscope looks nothing like the same plant growing in a garden.

As for the colloquiality of my voice, I would say it’s part conscious decision, part something inherent in my voice that I don’t fully control. It’s, like, just how I sound on the page. I was a newspaper journalist for more than a decade, so I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about and practicing how to use language that is accessible even when the subject matter might be complex.

Juxtaposition is one of my favorite things about poetry: the placing of words near each other in ways that create unexpected resonance.

Poems have a lot in common with jokes, from structure to how they work in an audience’s mind: invitation, misdirection, callback, surprise — but poems can’t be simply jokes, or only jokes. Poems are always about finding layers of meaning in the language, and humor can be so powerful as one of those layers.

I love the way a good title can invite the reader into a poem. Can set up expectations while leaving room for surprise. Can create its own little jolt of surprise even before the poem gets started. I love a title that looks different when you come back to it after finishing the poem. The title is separate from the poem yet at the same time also is the poem, the way a person’s name is the person. It’s this little rhetorical space where you get to play with words.

Wallace Huey
Creativity gives rise to the limited out of the unlimited, to sanity out of madness, to the valuable out of the priceless, to abundance out of nothingness, to the original out of the familiar, and to hope out of despair.
Ted Hughes
The first sign of disintegration — in a writer — is that the writing loses the unique stamp of his/her character, & loses its inner light.
